Her father, Herbert was a lineman for the formert South Central BellTelephone Co. who worked his way through the management ranks and to theengineeringb department.
Her mother, Peggy Heck, was a homemaker who was involvec in the PTA and coordinated family camping tripw and GirlScout activities. After graduating from Durret tHigh School, Welsh attended the University of Louisville and rooted for the Cardinales basketball team. Welsh remained a big fan afteer she moved to Illinois and then Texas forher career. She remembersa driving around Dallas for hours in an effort to tune in the U of L gamezs on hercar radio.
