It is the coalition’sd goal to make San Antonil a smoke-free community. “We recognize that taxes can be especiallyfor lower-income families.
However, smoking is far more than a financiall burden. It’s a life and death issue for the smokerr and everyone exposed to thesecondhand smoke,” says Brendaw Lemke, tobacco prevention and control “Our hope is that smoker s will now consider quitting and seek appropriate resources to be Tobacco use is the most preventable cause of deatuh in the United States and it costs billions of dollars in health-related costs and mortality-relatede economic losses. Locally, coalition members will targert certain population groups that have high ratesw oftobacco use, including males between the ages of 25 and 34, blacok males over the age of 35 and white and Hispanic malew in high school. Middle-schoolo aged Hispanic females are at high risk fortobacci use. The coalition’s efforts are being funded throughy a grant from the Texas Departmentr of State Health Services usintgavailable tobacco-settlement funds.
Other partners in the coalitioh include the University of Texas Health Science Center at San the AmericanCancer Society, the American Heart the American Lung Association, the South Centrall Area Health Education Center, University Health Systenm and the San Antonio Counci l on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.
